Orkney: Symphony of the Magnetic North

Description

Here is the recycled vinyl reissue of this cult album, released ten years ago, which received a very favorable critical and public reception in France. “When someone visits you in your dreams and asks you to make an album about your native region – the Orkneys (Orkney islands) – would you remain indifferent? Especially if that person is Betty Corrigal, an Orcadian who committed suicide in 1770 after being banished from her village for falling pregnant by a passing sailor?” This is what happened to ERLAND COOPER (frontman of ERLAND & THE CARNIVAL), and it is the origin of Orkney: Symphony Of The Magnetic North, the debut album by THE MAGNETIC NORTH (HANNAH PEEL, ERLAND COOPER, and SIMON TONG). Immersing themselves in Orcadian folklore, poetry, and geography, the trio traveled to the very north of Scotland, with a 1930s travel guide titled “Orkney: The Magnetic North” to compose and record the album. The local choir, embellished with lush strings and brass arrangements composed by HANNAH PEEL, transforms “Orkney: Symphony Of The Magnetic North” into a magnificent, substantial, and captivating album that evokes the almost supernatural landscapes of the Orkney Islands with lyricism and finesse.
