This generation

Description

Inspired by reggae, sound system culture, and a myriad of styles from both old and new Jamaican music, The Lions' sound is also firmly rooted in soul music. The 12-member group has been active since 2007 and brings together the best in reggae-soul creators in Los Angeles. Ska band Hepcat members Detson Berry and Alex Désert make up half of the vocal team. The other half includes the falsetto of Malik Moore and DJ Black Shakespeare, Robbie Shakespeare's cousin (from Sly & Robbie) and in charge of the i&i sound system. Among the other members are guitarist Dan Ubick (founding member of Connie Price & The Keystones), Dave Wilder on bass (co-writer and collaborator with Macy Gray), and other musicians who have played for De La Soul, Barrington Levy, Beck, Raphael Saadiq, and Black Eyed Peas. As the first reggae release from Stones Throw, The Lions join Aloe Blacc, Mayer Hawthorne, Dam Funk, Quakers, Anika, Jonti, and Stepkids in the label's musical openness initiative.
