A Constant Goodbye

The music of the band The Great Dying, led by Will Griffith, is a blend he likes to call dark country. He grew up in Cleveland, Mississippi, where DIY punk shows captivated him, and where his early bands played at the Farmhouse and the legendary delta juke joint, Po' Monkey's. The songs on The Great Dying's new album, A Constant Goodbye, were born from hundreds of concerts during their first album, Bloody Noses & Roses (2018), and the album continues where the previous one left off. The ballads remain sweet and menacing, the rock tracks are still exhilarating, but the new album pushes into new directions, infusing classic country sounds with traces of The Replacements and what was once called alternative rock. The tracks are layered and varied: wall-of-sound arrangements clash with flanger bass and violin, with Griffith's stripped-down acoustic guitar and vocals at the core of it all and an ever-present heartache.
