Guitarist Daddy Ghoul and the spine-chilling drummer Toni "Ghoulio" Ronkainen have shared a past life together in Kuolemanlaakso. Bassist Markus "Hella Ghoul" Makkonen once haunted the low frequencies for Hooded Menace, while the howler Arthur "LL Ghoul A" Thure sings for stoner rockers Thermate. But even though the band's initial inspiration came after blasting Venom, 'The Dark Overlords of the Universe' is possessed by a love for everything that marked the musicians during their childhood. With the swagger of Mötley Crüe and the rebellious attitude of Twisted Sister, the single "Too Ghoul for School" is packed with 80s antics more fun than a Saturday afternoon detention. The Misfits, White Zombie, and other cult references like The Wolfman pop up throughout the 34 minutes of this crystal-clear album. "Graverobbers from Outer Space" pays homage to a classic B-movie horror with a headbanging chorus, even though it's rare for pure punk tracks to be driven by a doom atmosphere. THE GHOULSTARS may be an assembly of the undead, but there's nothing pale or lifeless about 'The Dark Overlords of the Universe'. The title track blends surf rhythms, heavy riffs, and a chilling transition to an absolutely killer chorus.
