JONNY PIERCE OF THE DRUMS RETURNS WITH AN IRRESISTIBLY POP AND STILL SUNNY ALBUM "The hit potential of The Drums is still very much present" Les Inrocks
With Abysmal Thoughts, The Drums founder, Jonny Pierce, creates the album he has always carried in his heart. Of course, we're talking about The Drums, so this heart is necessarily broken, but there is beauty and even happiness in this type of broken heart, as well as a certain kind of glorious delirium that could knock you down in one second but also lift you up triumphantly the next.
In Abysmal Thoughts, Jonny Pierce takes full control: he not only writes the songs himself but also plays all the instruments and brings with him his very personal vision of life. It is therefore no coincidence that this is one of the most revealing works he has done to date. While Abysmal Thoughts doesn't sound at all abysmal as its title suggests, Pierce has rarely been so irresistibly pop – and that's because we're dealing here with how to realize what happiness means when the worst has already happened: "If there's one thing I can count on, it's the healing power of being an artist," he says. "I fell in love with music again."
