I Am Not There Anymore by The Clientele evokes what singer-guitarist Alasdair MacLean calls "the feeling of not being real." The recording of the album began in 2019 and continued sporadically until 2022 — partly due to the pandemic, but also because the band wanted to experiment. This time, with bassist James Hornsey and drummer Mark Keen, they incorporated elements of post-bop jazz, contemporary classical music, and electronic music. According to Alasdair MacLean, none of these elements had managed to find their way into their sound, except in a very ephemeral manner, with a very faint imprint. This expansion is clearly noticeable in the first single "Blue Over Blue," with its percussion samples and moments where the arrangement suddenly opens up to something cinematic, featuring brass and strings. According to Alasdair MacLean, I Am Not There Anymore deals with the memory of childhood, but also with the impossibility of truly remembering childhood... or even knowing who or what one is.
