The Bug is the project of Kevin Martin, a producer also known for diverse other projects. He is indeed part of TECHNO ANIMAL / ICE / GOD (with JUSTIN BROADRICK of GODFLESH / JESU), KING MIDAS SOUND, RAZOR X Productions (with THE ROOTSMAN), PRESSURE and LADYBUG, to name but a few. There is also his label, Pathological Records, and collaborations with 16-17, PETE "SONIC BOOM" KEMPER, JOHN ZORN, KEVIN SHIELDS, El-P, ANTIPOP CONSORTIUM. He has also worked with labels as diverse as Virgin (for jazz & dub compilations), Rephlex, Position Chrome/Mille Plateaux, Word Sound, Hyperdub, City Slang, Tigerbeat 6, Grand Royal, and now Ninja Tune. Finally, he has been personally commissioned to remix THOM YORKE, GRACE JONES, EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN and PRIMAL SCREAM. His new album, "London Zoo", is therefore the culmination of all these activities.
It is within the burgeoning Dub-step scene (of which THE BUG was a pioneer even before it was christened as such) and through contact with emblematic producers (including Kode 9) that KEVIN realized he was not alone on his chosen sonic path. "London Zoo" is therefore the result of three encounters: WARRIOR QUEEN, FLOWDAN and RICKY RANKING (well known for his work with ROOTS MANUVA). The same three who are at the forefront of the final outcome and upcoming live performances.
Although the entry point for this album is the Dub-step label, particularly after the success of the first three singles ("Jah War", "Skeng'" and "Poison Dart'), this record primarily celebrates the past and revives references to dancehall, grime, hip-hop, and other noise attacks. An album born from London's sound system culture, but whose charm extends far beyond.
