For over thirty years, Anton Newcombe has shaped The Brian Jonestown Massacre according to a completely independent artistic vision, recording, producing, and releasing his records on his own label A Recordings. The band's nineteenth album, Fire Doesn't Grow on Trees, was composed and recorded in Berlin at the pace of one song per day for nearly seventy days, during a period marked by the uncertainties of the pandemic. Surrounded by Ricky Maymi, Ryan Carlson Van Kriedt, Hákon Aðalsteinsson, Hallberg Daði Hallbergsson, Uri Rennert, and Sara Neidorf, Newcombe delivers an album where 1960s psychedelic pop meets garage rock, folk, and the long hypnotic drifts that are the band's signature. Tracks like The Real, Ineffable Mindfuck, and It's About Being Free Really evoke freedom, integrity, and resistance to external pressures, themes at the heart of an album that Newcombe considers one of the most accomplished of his career.
