The Canadians of The Band, then known at the time as “The Hawks,” spent the first part of the 60s playing mostly local shows. Guitarist Robbie Robertson’s meeting with Bob Dylan, who wanted to steer his new compositions toward a more rock sound, proved decisive for the group, which from 1966 onward accompanied the Folk boss on stage. After a first album released in 1968, which enjoyed real critical acclaim but did not reach the top of the charts, The Band released in 1969 what would remain one of the cornerstones of a scene eager to combine Folk, Country and Rock.
