With "Somnographe", the quartet performs a balancing act between Nilsson – that is, strangeness in classicism, but also humor that is clinical and absurd, a true disdain for effusiveness – and Grandaddy, because it proves that Nintendo 92 keyboards and bearded suburbanites (like The Agency) can be moving. And of course, there's this unbreakable affiliation with The Beach Boys because, well, because they're an absolute! The voices, the triumph of melody, the perfectionism... And then there’s also that fundamental connection to childhood. Like Animal Collective or Van Dyke Parks, that other father, a master of automatic writing applied to orchestration, The Agency creates music between pop and experimentation that doesn't focus on structure but rather on sound research: exploded and indivisible.
