En proposing a new ECM studio album entirely composed of unreleased music, Terje Rypdal undeniably makes an event. With Conspiracy, the great Norwegian guitarist gives the feeling of reconnecting with the wild inspiration that flowed through his early masterpieces Whenever I Seem To Be Far Away, Odyssey, and Waves, exploring all the sonic possibilities of the electric guitar with both the love of a rock improviser for raw energy and the sensitivity of a composer for space and subtle texture play. The keyboardist Ståle Storløkken, who has already been heard on previous Terje Vossabrygg and Crime Scene records, is the ideal collaborator, continuously feeding the musical intrigue with his own intuitions regarding complementary sound colors. Conspiracy also marks the grand return of Pål Thowsen, whose last appearances on ECM date back to the 70s when his drumming, both subtle and precise, fueled Arild Andersen's groups. This group, which presents itself as the best Rypdal has assembled in years, is completed by the young and talented bassist Endre Hareide Hallre. Conspiracy was recorded in Oslo at Rainbow Studio under the joint artistic direction of Manfred Eicher and Terje Rypdal.
