Sixty-four years after John Coltrane's recording of the revolutionary album Africa/Brass for Impulse!, Tenderlonious pays tribute to the original recording while reinventing it with a fervor that is his own, much like Coltrane. Africa/Brass Live was recorded at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival in October 2025, as part of Pique-nique's Take Two series. Each Take Two event begins with a full, high-fidelity listening of a landmark album, as it was originally conceived, followed by a live reinterpretation. It is an experience exploring what happens when seasoned musicians immerse themselves long enough in a work to find their own path. For this concert, Tenderlonious gathered a quartet of trusted collaborators. Tim Carnegie, his long-time drummer with Ruby Rushton, traveled from London. Horatio Luna on bass and On-Ly on piano complete the group; two Melbourne musicians that Tenderlonious describes as "severely underrated." This is what you hear on this album. One beautiful note, as Tenderlonious will tell you, is worth more than a thousand. Coltrane knew it. And on a Monday night in Melbourne, they proved it.
