Under the name Tele Novella, Chronis (who plays in the beloved and revived indie pop band Voxtrot) and Ribbons (who previously played in the "Victorian punk" project Agent Ribbons) have spent their last two albums creating "Medieval outsider country" on House Of Souls in 2016 and Merlynn Belle in 2021. Poet's Tooth – the band's second album for Kill Rock Stars – steers the duo's whimsical, western-tinged quality in fascinating new directions: a pop-cinematic ballad on the opening track featuring autoharp, "Young & Free," gently clicking americana folk on "Hard-Hearted Way," and bass-driven funk on the ironic "Eggs In One Basket." With the help of producer Danny Reisch, Tele Novella has created its most genre-rich, poetic, and sincere album to date.
