For its first vinyl release, Shakshouka Records is proud to present the very first reissue by the Algerian Kabyle group: Syphax, a 45 rpm containing two irresistible disco gems that will set the dance floor on fire, while channeling a kaleidoscope of psychedelic textures and the Amazigh spirit of North Africa. Born in exile on the outskirts of Paris, Syphax fused psychedelic rock, funk, and North African rhythms with the lyricism of Amazigh poetry and the rebellious energy of the 1970s. This record brings together the festive track “Thamghra,” which means “party” in Amazigh and originally appeared on their now-forgotten LP, and the disco track “Skate Dance,” released years before skate culture spread around the world and bearing witness to the group’s avant-garde edge. Remastered by Nick Robbins and compiled by Cheb Mimo, this reissue restores Syphax’s bold sound: a voice of diaspora, freedom, and boundless creativity.
