Swearing At Motorists has come a long way since its inception as a poster for a fake band in 1994. A few months after these mysterious posters appeared in record stores and concert halls in Dayton, Ohio, Dave Doughman scrawled the name on a homemade demo tape that he gave to his friends — the band was born. By the late 90s, S@M released a series of 7" records on various labels. Supported by John Peel and praised by the international press, the band signed with Secretly Canadian, which had just been founded at the time. They would release 2 EPs and 4 albums there, including Number Seven Uptown (2000) and This Flag Signals Goodbye (2002), both designated "Underground Album of the Year" by MOJO Magazine. Based in Berlin since 2005, the band released Last Night Becomes This Morning in 2006, their last album for Secretly Canadian, before quietly disappearing into the Berlin night… Eight years later, Swearing At Motorists reappeared in Hamburg with a new album, While Laughing, The Joker Tells The Truth, released in 2014 on Anton Newcombe's label A Recordings Ltd. Co-produced by Dave and Rick McPhail (from the cult band Tocotronic), this album tells the story of the eight years of absence in the pure Motorists style.
