Description

A musical road trip ample and rhythmically driven by guitar, reminiscent of the slowcore and alternative rock of the 90s and early 2000s, and infusing them with new life. Mount Zero, the debut album by Swapmeet, marks the blossoming of the Australian quartet. Following their dreamlike first EP, Oxalis (2024), Mount Zero arrives shortly after the band signed with the Winspear label, based in Los Angeles. The band has already made waves in Australia, winning the Best Release and Best Song ("Ceiling Fan") awards at the South Australian Music Awards, and earning the title of "Best Emerging Artist" at SXSW Sydney. Blending airy softness with incisive surrealism, Mount Zero transforms the regrets and uncertainties of youth into a nascent and rediscovered confidence. Although the members of Swapmeet often start writing their songs individually, the tracks on Mount Zero revolve around common themes: first loves, first heartbreaks, first shames, first disasters. As they have done since their beginnings, Swapmeet exchanged their instruments throughout the recording of Mount Zero and shared production duties among the four of them, developing their sound by layering dozens (if not hundreds) of tracks in each song, then patiently removing elements until the production takes a clear shape. The result is an album where Swapmeet captures the visceral intensity of the inner transformation felt under the relentless pressure of reality. It is a tribute to all the lives that will never be lived, to all the paths that will never be taken… and an ode to the one that lies right in front of us.
