Description

The majority of the nine slithery songs that make up Skinless Takes A Flight by supernowhere were originally tracks that did not debut on Gestalt. However, after collectively moving across the country from Burlington, VT to Seattle, WA, the discarded tracks transformed substantially into lush, sometimes enchanting compositions. The thrilling "Circles" opens the album with insightful reflections on empathy, breathing a midtempo syncopation with a muted guitar tiptoeing around a melodic drumbeat. The supernowhere lineup, consisting of Meredith Davey (bass, vocals), Kurt Pacing (guitar, vocals), and Matt Anderson (drums), shares a collective ambition for maximum interaction and collaborative writing, materializing tightly woven compositions that evoke vibrant dreamlike landscapes and the profound epiphanies that arise from them ("The Hand," "Ecdysis"). On "Dirty Tangle," Davey's voice glides through Pacing's angular arpeggios, carving out its own rhythmic path with her distinctive, scanned singing style. Notably, "Skinless Takes A Flight" would not have come to fruition without the help of engineer Dylan Hanwright (mix. Gulfer, mem. Great Grandpa, I Kill Giants), whom the band met shortly after moving to Seattle. Hanwright offered the studio where the album was recorded as a temporary space for rehearsal and writing during the pandemic, allowing him to become intimately familiar with the music, resulting in an album that was recorded as intimately as it was written. Hanwright also helped highlight the small moments, as heard in the fleeting vocal harmonies on "Augury," or the spiraling chaos in "Basement Window," further testifying to the collaborative nature and contributions of each member that characterize supernowhere's dizzying yet meditative second album.
