"I feel like there are two sides of me," says the Nashville-based singer-songwriter and guitar virtuoso known as Sunny War. "One of them is very self-destructive, and the other is trying to work with that other half to keep things balanced." This is the central conflict of her fourth album, the eclectic and innovative Anarchist Gospel, which documents a time when it seemed the self-destructive side might prevail. Extreme emotions can make this battle all the more perilous, but from these trials, Sunny has created a collection of songs that draw from a range of ideas and styles, as if she is gathering all her strengths to convey her thoughts: ecstatic gospel, dusty country blues, reflective folk, roaring rock and roll, and even avant-garde studio experiments. She merges them into a powerful statement of survival, revealing a songwriter who does not indulge in any comforting platitudes and a highly innovative guitarist who deploys spider-like riffs throughout each song. Because it does not promise healing but rather resilience and perseverance, because it does not take the crap for granted, Anarchist Gospel withstands such intense emotional pressure, acknowledging the pain of living while seeking something that lies just beyond ourselves, a certain sense of balance between good and evil.
