Fourth of July presents two alternative versions of the title by Sufjan Stevens, originally released in 2015 on his album Carrie & Lowell. Both versions were recorded around 2014: "Fourth of July (April Base Version)" in Wisconsin at Justin Vernon's April Base studio, and "Fourth of July (DUMBO Version)" in Sufjan's former studio in Brooklyn. As is often the case, Sufjan frequently works on different versions of his songs during the recording of an album, and "Fourth of July" is no exception. The song's refrain, "We're all gonna die," invites meditation on mortality and the fragility of human existence, even as it serves as an anchor of stoic hope. The song has recently seen a resurgence of interest from listeners, which may reflect a deep American national grief and a sense of loss.
