I Was Born Swimming

Description

Squirrel Flower’s music is warm and ethereal, brimming with emotional depth, yet sharp and self-assured. The band plays with delicate intent, keeping arrangements natural and light, while Williams' guitar is often ferociously unleashed. The album was recorded live at Rare Book Room Studio in New York with producer Gabe Wax (Adrienne Lenker, Palehound, Cass McCombs). At the heart of the album remains Williams’ captivating voice and her moving and melancholic guitar. Sounds expand and contract through various moods, letting loose on the heavier riffs of “Red Shoulder” or “Streetlight Blues,” two tracks recorded in Boston. Across twelve songs, landscapes change, relationships evolve. “There’s a lot on the album about movement and stagnation. Feeling stuck, needing to move, or not move, swimming, falling, running, growing, etc.,” says Williams. The album’s lyrics seem to naturally express what change precisely represents – abstract, determined, and hopeful. Williams ultimately returns to this image of herself enveloped in this membrane; born swimming, knowing how to exist, to love oneself, without needing anyone else to achieve it.
