SPELLLING (aka Chrystia Cabral) announces her new album, Portrait of My Heart, on Sacred Bones. On Chrystia’s fourth album as SPELLLING, the Bay Area artist turns her acclaimed avant-pop project inward. Portrait of My Heart’s lyrics delve into love, intimacy, anxiety, and alienation, trading the allegorical approach of much of her previous work for something she says is “pointed at my human heart.” The result is SPELLLING’s most direct album yet, and its immediacy underscores the essential mutability of Chrystia’s practice. From the shadowy minimalism of her early music, to 2021’s richly orchestrated prog-pop The Turning Wheel, to this new energetic expression of her creative spirit, Chrystia proves again and again that SPELLLING can be whatever she wants it to be. She worked with a trio of producers: The Turning Wheel engineer Drew Vandenberg, SZA collaborator Rob Bisel, and Yves Tumor producer Psymun.
