The album scored 81 out of 100 on the review aggregation website Metacritic, based on 16 reviews. Pitchfork Media ranked *Major Arcana* 48th on its list of the 50 best albums of 2013. Released in July 2013, the young rock band Speedy Ortiz released their debut album, *Major Arcana*. Comprised of Sadie Dupuis (vocals, lyrics, and guitars), Matt Robidoux (guitars), Darl Ferm (bass), and Mike Falcone (drums), the quartet formed when Dupuis decided to leave New York to move to Northampton, Massachusetts, to pursue a master's degree in poetry. After meeting the musicians who would join her, she founded Speedy Ortiz, and the band immediately caught the attention of an audience eager for the DIY scene in the Boston area. Produced at Sonelab studio by Justin Pizzoferrato (Chelsea Light Moving, Dinosaur Jr.), *Major Arcana* undeniably bears the producer's signature: abrasive guitars, the use of a panoply of distortion pedals, and a lo-fi aesthetic that takes us straight back to the nineties. Speedy Ortiz is a mixture of Pavement, Sebadoh, Liz Phair, and Superchunk.
