The band finds itself in the following configuration: Kim-Thurston-Lee-Steve. They write songs, Jim O'Rourke (a member of the band on the albums "Murray Street" & "Sonic Nurse") recommends sound engineers TJ Doherty, J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr), and John Agnello, and together they develop this very original "Rather Ripped." This album begins its creation at dawn in 2005 and ends at sunset in 2006 in the very honorable Soundstudios, in the old theater district of New York. They mix the album between Sound Studios and Water Music in Hoboken (New Jersey), passing through the very fine ear of John Agnello, contributing to the positive energy that emanates from Sonic Youth. 12 songs full of harmonious movements and melodic surprises. The lead vocals are laid down by Thurston, Kim, and Lee, joined by the rock rhythms of Steve. It bursts forth first with the sonic abundance of "Incinerate" (single) and "Reena." We then contemplate the sacred games of war and spirit in "Do You Believe in Raptureoe." The journey continues with bold rock pieces/jams to finish with a very mysterious "Or." This album is therefore a pure and burning concentrate of Sonic Youth, with a real potential for rock illumination. Rather torn (Rather Ripped), indeed.
