Sonic Youth has always defied the conventions of rock by integrating avant-garde and experimental influences. Inspired by Television, Glenn Branca, and Rhys Chatham, they explored the tension between chaos and harmony through dissonant guitars and nonlinear structures.
With Goodbye 20th Century (1999), the band fully immerses itself in experimental contemporary music, reinterpreting works by John Cage, Christian Wolff, and Steve Reich, among others.
This project marks a turning point where Sonic Youth abandons traditional rock patterns for a free and improvised approach, highlighting collaborations with figures like Jim O'Rourke, Christian Marclay, and William Winant.
Alongside their major label career, they explore these territories through the SYR series, while maintaining a balance between radicality and accessibility.
This project embodies their quest for innovation and their desire to push musical boundaries, while leaving a lasting mark on the experimental and rock scene of the 21st century.
