After a first album, Hidden Memories, released in 2017 and unanimously praised by critics, and a single that went around the world, Somehow returns with 9 new tracks gathered on Low Tide, an album due out in October 2019 on the Toolong Records label and distributed by Differ-Ant. Multi-instrumentalist and a Do It Yourself enthusiast, Erwan Pépiot recorded and mixed his project entirely on his own in his home studio in the Paris suburbs. The only exception to the rule is Aurélie Tremblay’s voice, present on every track, which blends with Erwan’s lower tones as if it were the most natural thing in the world. The voice is also what first catches the attention when discovering Somehow’s melancholic universe. Erwan’s timbre and phrasing belong to a tradition shared by artists such as Morrissey or Ian Curtis, expressing a real singularity and sincerity in both the melodies and the lyrics. If the very present bass recalls openly embraced cold wave references, from The Cure to Joy Division, the richness of the arrangements blurs the lines and reveals a broader musical palette, coupled with a knack for blending together varied sounds that are not unlike the bright indie-pop of Belle & Sebastian and Fanfarlo. On stage, Erwan delivers an intense and intimate performance of his songs, in a guitar/vocal setup. Today, it can be said: he gets drunk with one of the best bands, period.
