'Other Doors' is the first studio album by Soft Machine since 'Hidden Details' in 2018 and marks a new chapter in the history of the legendary prog/jazz/fusion band - both an end and a beginning - for this unique group that has been around for 55 years. This album features the last studio appearance of drumming legend John Marshall, aged 81, who has decided to retire due to ongoing health issues. The album also sees the arrival of bassist Fred Baker into the band following the retirement of Roy Babbington, who had been with the group since 1970. The album contains a lot of great new music and inspired playing, as well as the reinvention of two Soft Machine classics - "Penny Hitch" (from "Seven") and "Joy of a Toy" (from the first album). Atmospheric improvisations, psychedelic free jazz, fiery jazz rock, screaming guitar, hypnotic looping alto flutes, fretless bass grooves, powerful drumming, and experimental electronic music... Soft Machine continues to pursue its musically ambitious, broad, and boundary-less jazz-based music. Creating the most ambitious and adventurous music the band can imagine.
