On previous Slaughter Beach, Dog albums, Jake Ewald (of Modern Baseball) has crafted a distinct sound. It’s music that blends pop, indie-rock, folk, and a dash of punk to create something accessible yet always with a certain artistic richness. With Safe And Also No Fear, the band’s third album released in 2019, Jake Ewald abandoned his usual practices in favor of a creation that isn’t so easy to describe. While Ewald once told tightly knit stories about characters who mirrored those around him, Safe And Also No Fear finds him laid bare at the album’s center, questioning everything he knows about himself. Around him, bassist Ian Farmer, guitarist Nick Harris, and drummer Zack Robbins weave dense songs, swirling blends of difficult questions that can’t be expressed in the conventional structures of pop music. That’s not to say there aren’t catchy tracks, supported by effervescent melodies, but Safe And Also No Fear generally avoids taking the most obvious path.
