Bam Bam

Description

Having become a classic reggae anthem, this song celebrates Sister Nancy's success as a woman in the male-dominated dancehall scene of the 80s. Nancy was the first woman to perform at Reggae Sunsplash, a Jamaican reggae festival, and the first female Jamaican DJ to tour internationally. The song's chorus has been sampled, remixed, covered, and interpolated into several songs since its release. This chorus is actually taken from The Maytals' 1965 song of the same title. Sister Nancy or Muma Nancy, real name Ophlin Russell-Myers (born Ophlin Russell on January 2, 1962, in Kingston, Jamaica), is a reggae and, more specifically, dancehall singer and DJ. She is globally famous for being the first female DJ and has been described as a "dominant female voice for over two decades" on the dancehall scene. Sister Nancy is the sister of Robert Russell, better known by his stage name Brigadier Jerry, an influential Jamaican DJ. Sister Nancy is part of a very large family, with 15 siblings. She was quickly drawn into reggae by her brother Robert Russell, aka Brigadier Jerry, a renowned and influential DJ. Her first steps into reggae thus took place during her teenage years, during which she notably performed with the Jahlove music sound system, where her brother was a resident DJ. But it was the great producer Winston Riley (Jimmy Riley, Horace Andy, Pat Kelly, General Echo...) who discovered her talent in 1980 and propelled her to the forefront by having her record her first single, Papa Dean, on his Techniques label. The track was so successful that it led to the production of her first album, One Two, in 1982, which contained the famous Bam Bam performed on Winston Riley's equally famous Stalag riddim. Her career literally took off with this album, which also contained several hits (One Two, Money Can't Buy Me Love, Transport Connection), and Sister Nancy became the first female DJ on the international scene and to tour worldwide – she would also be the first female DJ to perform on the stage of the legendary Reggae Sunsplash festival. She then collaborated with the great Yellowman (Jah mek us fe a purpose), worked with the famous producer Henry "Junjo" Lawes... After these spectacular beginnings, Sister Nancy prioritized stability and her future. She moved to New Jersey and joined a bank as an accountant. Her music remaining her first love, as she frequently reminds us, she nevertheless continues to regularly perform at a few dates and festivals around the world.
