The tempest

A deeply modern dimension emerges from this confrontation between English works from the 17th century (Henry Purcell, Matthew Locke) and works from the 20th and 21st centuries (Philippe Hersant, Franck Martin and Thierry Pécou). Drawing on very different musical worlds, each composition is nevertheless largely inspired by the founding themes of Shakespeare’s work and sometimes includes excerpts from his play. The narrator’s text, as well as all the sung parts, is spoken in English, in Shakespeare’s “Old English,” in order to restore the suave and strong accent of this language.
