Bastard Jazz is proud to present the debut EP from producer and multi-instrumentalist Simon Mavin. Best known as the keyboardist, co-producer, and member of the renowned Australian group Hiatus Kaiyote, Simon has been involved in numerous projects but had not yet released an album under his own name until now. The EP, which includes two original tracks and two remixes by Australians Harvey Sutherland and Close Counters, was recorded between projects at the Grove, a small recording sanctuary in Melbourne. In the studio, 30 to 40 synthesizers were all meticulously connected to be simultaneously accessible and ready to be recorded at a moment's notice. A drum kit in one corner was constantly mic'd up, and everything went through a multitude of analog mixing consoles offering different flavors of tone and texture. "Good Hair Day" is a dancing and contagious jam, featuring an ultra-funky synth bass line reminiscent of Herbie Hancock's repertoire from the 1970s. On the flip side, "Only You & Me" is a slower tempo track, with live drums played by Nick Martyn, an extraterrestrial bass line, splashing keyboards, otherworldly oscillating vocoder parts, and jazzy keyboard solos.
