A pioneer of jazz (the first soloist ever to be recorded), the first great saxophonist of the genre, with a unique vibrato and a typically Creole sense of syncopation, Sidney Bechet is one of those who, born in New Orleans at the end of the 19th century, shaped the bubbling matrix of what would come to be called jazz. His compositions, of incomparable sensitivity, made music history in the 20th century and influenced many musicians. After the publication of a book about his father in 2009, his son, the Franco-American drummer Daniel Sidney Bechet, decided to form a quintet to perpetuate his father’s memory and legacy. He brought together Olivier Franc, who is undoubtedly one of the greatest specialists in Sidney Bechet and New Orleans jazz (Sidney Bechet Prize from the Académie du Jazz, Hot Club de France Prize). Together they discovered and arranged two previously unreleased pieces composed by Bechet, 50 years after the artist’s death, and set off on an international tour. An album whose strength lies not in blood ties, but in the authenticity of the reinterpretation, the embodiment of tribute, respect, and the desire to share.
