It has been thirty years since we originally released this retrospective of Okinawa icon Shoukichi Kina. Kina used to throw himself on the floor and kick when he liked a take. I remember thinking, that beats “one more for us, guys!” When Kina’s wife, Tomoko, laid down the vocal on “Flowers For You Heart,” he lay down and stayed down, forcing the engineer to play it back over and over until he was spent — a real take party, Okinawa style. At that point, you know you’re ready to start recording for real, but it never works that way. You cut one or two, say adios and go home. Then later, maybe four people discover your mini contribution and all of a sudden some are ready to reissue it.
