Shirley Hurt/Limited Transparent Orange Vinyl

Description

Shirley Hurt is the perfect nom de plume for this Toronto-based creative artist. Her eponymous debut album positions her as the protagonist of her own universe. Traversing sonic landscapes, Shirley Hurt’s voice drifts in and out like lyrical lines that trace the contours of her own map. By the age of 18, Shirley Hurt had travelled extensively and lived in over 20 different apartments and homes, never truly feeling "at home" anywhere. It was at this age that Hurt found herself in New York City, where she familiarized herself with various music scenes and fields. The first and only place she felt at home and that partly makes up her home base. When the project she was working on in New York reached a dead end, she moved back west and in with musicians Harrison Forman (Hieronymus Harry, Zones) and Patrick Lefler (Roy, Possum). Surrounded by their around-the-clock improvisations, a new approach came to be. Hurt and Forman decided to travel the US and Canada in a camper trailer for six months, and the album was entirely written during the final months of their journey. Hurt's shape-shifting, phrasing-bending music alchemizes the farthest reaches of experimental indie folk, pop, and country into a singular sound of elegant unpredictability.
