American Zach Saginaw systematically places his music in a deeply personal family context; his grandmother inspired two albums, his producer pseudonyms, Shigeto and Frank Omura, both reference family names, and it’s no coincidence that his latest album under the name Shigeto is titled Lineage. While only he can speak to the ancestral motivation referenced in the eight instrumental songs that make up the mini album Lineage, it is easy to see it as an acknowledgment of the debt to musical ancestors, a reverent respect owed to the jazz, hip-hop, funk, and folk that animate these eight songs. Each song is a complex constellation of sounds and ideas, but the focus and restraint he demonstrates in composition allow for songs that also have a cosmic tendency.
