Around a collection of rare instruments – a 36-string kantele, bowls, bells, reeds, recordings of water and wind – Finnish musician Simo Hakalisto composes with Toinen Luonto a suite of eight pieces where each sound seems to naturally emerge from its environment. Under the name Shakali, he emphasizes resonances, silences, and variations in timbre, in an approach that draws from ambient, electroacoustic, and minimalist music.
