First solo album by Brian Sella of the Front Bottoms, produced by Emperor X. While continuing to record and tour with the Front Bottoms, Sella ventured out on his own to keep things alive. "I've tried different things over the years, but what I always come back to is songwriting and storytelling. It's something I have to do, and I need to find new ways to do it." Lyrically, the album moves geographically - an American shark in an Australian river, songs titled after South Dakota and Wichita, Kansas. Sella has always named his songs after places, but here these locations feel more like inner landscapes, metaphorical spaces for what’s happening in his mind. Musically, rivers of ambient sound run parallel to the voice and guitar, piano and guitar melodies respond to each other, brass sections rise and fall, and a bugle brushes the edges of jazz. An album that envelops.
