MARE UNDARUM (vinyl)

Description

INVENTIVE, FREE, AND SKILLFULLY ORCHESTRATED JAZZ. - DEBUT ALBUM -Recorded at Studio Pigalle in Paris, at the invitation of the young Komos label, Sélène Saint-Aimé's debut album, 'Mare Undarum', captivates with its richness, poetry, and originality: there's that incredible vocal flexibility, that free-spirited double bass playing, but also arrangements for saxophone, trumpet, percussion, violin, and cello. A blend of the warmth of brass, the wood of strings, and the rhythm of the ka drum, revealing Caribbean and African influences. Sélène Saint-Aimé owes this taste for inventive and rich music particularly to American saxophonist Steve Coleman, whom she met during a residency in Montreuil in 2016 and reconnected with in New York some time later. There, she frequented the most prestigious jazz clubs, crossed paths with Ron Carter and Ravi Coltrane; she listened, observed, learned. All to embark today on a personal path that will take her far.Sélène sensitively shares her music, which is original, creative, and sometimes surprisingly lyrical.Sélène Saint-Aimé initially worked with saxophone, trumpet, and percussion, then added strings: violin, cello, and double bass. The project's idea was to blend the warmth of brass, the wood of strings, and the rhythm of the ka drum. It was up to the musicians to push their improvisations towards very rhythmic African landscapes. Influences that the young musician and composer, of Caribbean and African origin, fully embraces.
