Description

Visionary engineer, producer, and dub experimenter, Scientist returns to his roots to mix his new album directly onto vinyl for the latest Night Dreamer session. With over 60,000 recordings to his credit, Scientist (born Hopeton Overton Brown) is one of the most influential figures in dub. From Studio One to King Tubby's, from Channel One to Tuff Gong, he has worked in the best studios in Kingston, pioneering recording techniques and elevating dub mixing to a standalone art form. Known as the "Dub Chemist" for his technical expertise and forward-thinking ideas, Scientist's Night Dreamer session brings together musicians from across the London reggae scene, including the Mafia rhythm section (bass) and Fluxy (drums) from the Instigators, Creation Rebel guitarist Tony Ruffcut, singer Donovan Kingjay, Jah Shaka keyboardist Greg Assing, and saxophonist Finn Peters. Accompanied by Amsterdam-based trombonist Salvoandrea Lucifora and backing vocalists Alyssa Harrigan and Peace Oluwatobi, Scientist dismantled the studio and reassembled it to his exact specifications. He spent hours on the kick drum, rewired the high-pass filter on the mixing console, brought in two 18-inch subwoofers, crammed everyone (except Fluxy on drums) into the control room, and made the whole place shake with the power and clarity of the bass. After properly setting up the studio, the group recorded six tracks that were then directly cut onto lacquer by Scientist, allowing his creativity to take over.
