Lyrically, Byford likes to explore all areas of history and mystery, with Marie-Antoinette, Kubla Khan, the Battle of Hastings, the Salem witch trials and the struggle between good and evil on the title track. Musically, Saxon brings everything to the table. There is a furious tribute to current heavy metal in the denim-and-leather-coated super-sprint “Fire And Steel”, a wonderful nod to the birth of the NWOBHM in the electric mid-tempo “Pirates Of The Airwaves”, but perhaps the real treasure among the gems is “There’s Something In Roswell”, with the kind of expansive groove and embrace that deserve arenas. Add to that the excellent production by Biff and Andy Sneap (Sneap also mixed and mastered Hell, Fire And Damnation) and you get Saxon’s most definitive statement in years.
