Description

Best known for her work as a member of Arcade Fire and Bell Orchestre, or for her collaborations with The Luyas, Esmerine, or Little Scream, Montreal violinist and composer Sarah Neufeld releases her first album, Hero Brother, recorded and produced by pianist Nils Frahm. A violinist since childhood, Sarah Neufeld develops a style based on improvisations. It was only from 2011 that her solo violin pieces became more formal. Her influences include Béla Bartók, Steve Reich, Iva Bittová, and Arthur Russell; this does not prevent elements from electro-acoustic, avant-folk, or indie rock from being found. These varied influences are reflected in the album's tracks, oscillating between dark and majestic atmospheres, playing with emotions. The recording took place in Berlin, in different locations each with specific acoustics: an abandoned dome, an underground car park, and the Studio P4 recording studio. Nils Frahm recorded and produced the album, and also played harmonium and piano on a few tracks.
