The feeling of intimacy is present in every moment on Radiator, the first album by Sadurn, a band from Philadelphia. This sense of closeness, of being able to devote all your senses to someone’s internal conflict, is largely due to the circumstances in which this album was created. As the world fell apart in 2020, Sadurn retreated to a cabin in the Pocono Mountains to create and record what would become their debut album. Within the confines of their tight quarters, with only a few animals as auditory witnesses to a makeshift recording studio created by moving furniture, Sadurn crafted an album that breaks your heart, then slowly mends it. Sadurn began as a solo project of Genevieve DeGroot. Starting guitar in 2015, Genevieve began writing songs, then playing DIY shows across Philadelphia. Over time, the direction, sound, and members of Sadurn changed. The beginning of 2020 was meant to mark their debut as a quartet (Jon Cox on guitar/tenor guitar, Tabita Ahnert on bass, and Amelia Swan on drums), but the world had other plans and the band adapted. Drawing inspiration from artists like Gillian Welch, Alex G, and Jason Molina, Sadurn’s emotive indie rock explores the struggles and beauty found in grappling with multiple emotional realities, especially when it comes to interpersonal relationships. This conflict, the idea of being forced to choose, even when terrified, is present on singles like "Radiator" and "Golden Arm." The latter is a slow ballad that reveals its true colors as it progresses, ultimately blossoming with unexpected confessions of desire and uncertainty. Indecision, heartaches, and the attempt to live fully through one’s days against the backdrop of a progressively worsening hellscape are common to everyone, but on Radiator, Sadurn tears down the walls that others so often erect.
