S.Carey is the stage name of Sean Carey, a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer based in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Over the past ten years, Sean has often explored themes of nature and sustainability in his flourishing solo career, thanks to songwriting inspired by the early days of jazz and sincere, touching lyrics. In his fourth and new album, Break Me Open, he has confronted darkness, written about fear, looked at love from new angles, and set aside everything he knew. The last two years have been the most difficult of his life: filled with grief, loss, and change. Two choices were presented to him. To run away, become bitter, succumb to drugs, run and keep running. Or, to turn towards an introspective approach. To dig deep where pain lives, where fear escalates, in an attempt to shed his skin and return as a better person. No one is perfect. This is not a "divorce" album. And even though it is an experience that deeply shook him, sometimes leaving him wondering who he was, this record is more than that. It is about love – whether past, present, or future. It is about fatherhood – that immense feeling of deep love for his children and the melancholy of watching them grow before his eyes. It is about accepting one's faults and mistakes, exposing oneself, and trying each day to know oneself better than the day before. But above the darkness, it is a message of hope, honesty, and growth. It is a call to be vulnerable. On Break Me Open, he opens up not only about himself but also welcomes more voices than ever into his world. The graceful strings are the work of the masterful Rob Moose, and you will also find Ben Lester, Jeremy Boettcher, Nick Ball, John Raymond, Chris Thomson, Eli Teplin, and Taylor Deupree. Alongside his solo career, S. Carey is also the drummer, backing vocalist, and member of Bon Iver. He has produced, written, and/or collaborated with artists such as Low, Mike Kinsella, Pieta Brown, and Ed Tullett of Novo, and contributed to Sufjan Stevens' album Carrie & Lowell.
