The album revisits the riffs and melodies of Geneva, released in 2009, and injects increasingly complex rhythms, with all the visceral intensity of Godflesh, Swans, and Neurosis. Empros is simply the Master of Reality of Russian Circles: a radical revision of heaviness and melody, a monolithic work in its clarity and perfection. The album was recorded at Phantom Manor studio in Chicago with producer Brandon Curtis of The Secret Machines and Interpol (who also produced the band's previous album, Geneva), and Russian Circles sought to experiment with new ways of playing. The band reached a new creative peak where each of the musicians, guitarist Mike Sullivan, drummer Dave Turncrantz, and bassist Brian Cook, brings a both simple and intense approach by experimenting and merging different musical genres.
