Saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins returns with a new album, titled The 7th Hand. This new release is made up of a suite of seven movements performed as a quartet, with Micah Thomas on piano, Daryl Johns on bass and Kweku Sumbry on drums, as well as special guests such as flutist Elena Pinderhughes and the percussion ensemble Farafina Kan. This hour-long suite, made up of the seven movements, strives to bring the quartet together as a complete ensemble from start to finish, where the music would be entirely collectively improvised. The title is derived from a question steeped in biblical symbolism: if the number six represents the scope of human possibilities, Wilkins wondered what it would be like to invoke divine intervention and allow this seventh element to possess his quartet.
