ROTTING CHRIST is a Greek extreme metal duo formed in Athens in 1987, consisting of brothers Sakis and Themis Tolis, and is among the most prolific and evolving bands in the genre. Originally released in 2002, 'Genesis', whose title is derived from the Greek G???S?S, meaning "birth", has established itself as a true synthesis, combining the gothic melodicism of the band's mid-period works with the more aggressive energy of their early tracks. Produced by Andy Classen at Stage One Studios in Germany, the album offers a precise and impactful sound: a powerful bass, controlled guitar distortion, and drums perfectly integrated into the music. Gregorian chant passages intertwine with the faster sections, the band's characteristic rhythmic syncopation is ever-present, and Sakis delivers some of his most impressive vocal performances to date. Tracks like "Daemons", "Lex Talionis", and the poignant "Ad Noctis", which would later appear on the soundtrack of the video game Brütal Legend, testify to the band's exceptional compositional mastery, while "Release Me" and "Dying" are among the standout tracks of this period in their career. Retrospectively, 'Genesis' appears as the ultimate step before ROTTING CHRIST embarked on a series of masterful albums: the album where all elements come together and where their sound is fully personal.
