Shortly after the meteoric success of Strong Persuader in 1986—a phenomenon hard to imagine at the time and which now seems almost impossible—Cray decided to turn toward the Stax and Hi-Soul sound rather than becoming a full-fledged bluesman. He punctuated his songs with incisive riffs, not unlike those of Albert King, but his style was closer to O.V. Wright. What truly set Cray apart from his predecessors was his elegance and refinement, far from any vulgarity or harshness. After 25 years and 14 albums, Robert Cray has been drawing from the same understated, muted Memphis soul-blues groove for more than two-thirds of his career.
