After the albums Ida in 2014 and Ants in 2017 (twice named “Révélation” by Jazz Magazine), saxophonist Ricardo Izquierdo presents his new record Kikun Pelu Mi Wá. (“Painting with my roots” in Yoruba). Originally from Matanzas, a flagship city and cultural hub of the island of Cuba, he unveils a personal, lyrical and poetic music at the crossroads of jazz and his Afro-Cuban roots. Here he pays vibrant tribute to the spiritual forces of the Yoruba religion. Izquierdo composed the music for this variable-geometry ensemble and surrounded himself with musicians with whom he has long collaborated. The result is a fluidity of playing that reflects a bond forged over the years.
