After the revelation of the first album, Requin Chagrin, in 2015, and then the confirmation of the second, Sémaphore (2019), Marion Brunetto was confronted with the multitude of options that a third record can represent. Rather than choosing from the start, she explored, for months and months, sounds, ideas, words. We find her melancholy, her soaring sensations, but also self-assertion, underscored by rebellious drums. The lyrics, like the music, take fewer detours. The artistic ambition? To start from dream pop and refine it with the reverbs of rock'n'roll, echoes of the eighties, satisfying a need for light. And, above all, to surrender to her acknowledged addiction: instrumental equipment.
Thus, every opportunity was good to test a synthesizer here, borrow one there, feel and retune guitar strings. At Requin Chagrin, a song is a quest, and any means is good to achieve it. With her sheer will but also the support of her entourage, from Nicola Sirkis, who signed her to his label KMS, to Chab (Daft Punk, AIR, Sebastian) for the mastering. The sound engineer Ash Workman (Christine & The Queen, Metronomy, Veronica Falls) also stood out, who, from his English town of Margate, strengthened a sound compression that nonetheless escaped any aggressiveness: Marion's renewed energy was captured throughout her work on the ten tracks of BYE BYE BABY.
Started just before the lockdown, finished during a recording at the prestigious Brussels studios ICP, at the end of summer 2020, BYE BYE BABY reflects the inner world of an artist who wants to express herself about who she is while telling the world around her. She abandoned her cassette recorder for a reel-to-reel (a Fostex A8 LR), a method that influenced the composition of the tracks and offered as many constraints as possibilities. She remains influenced by Beach House, Molly Nilsson, Exploded View, Pale Saints, The Proper Ornaments, Cigarettes After Sex, John Maus, the label Italians Do It Better, vintage synth demos and effect pedals, Kate Bush, and the Cocteau Twins, to whom she remains religiously faithful.
