The Chicago rock band Red Red Meat made a strong impact with Bunny Gets Paid in 1995. Undoubtedly the band's most complete album, the record combines the blues-rock roots of the Stones with beautiful songs, sounding miles away from the grunge and alternative rock tropes of the time. Recorded at Idful Studios in Wicker Park, Chicago by producer Brad Wood (Smashing Pumpkins, Liz Phair, Tortoise), Bunny Gets Paid finds the core members of Red Red Meat, Tim Rutilli, Brian Deck, Ben Massarella, and Tim Hurley, straddling their most accessible set of songs and a desire to explore a kind of "alternative fidelity," employing layers of distortion, natural reverb, and room ambiance. "At the time, I felt like we had made a classic rock record," says Rutilli. "I thought, 'These are our astral weeks.' But listening back 20 years later, Rutilli acknowledges the band's ambition, a desire to break down the songs to their most stripped-down and primitive elements to 'see what survives.'
