As a sideman in the Miles Davis Quintet during the 1950s, pianist William McKinley "Red" Garland Jr. formed his own trio at the end of the decade. Released in 1957, 'Groovy', his third album as a bandleader recorded for Prestige Records, unleashes formidable hard bop energy on a selection of standards, ballads, and blues sequences, alongside Paul Chambers (double bass) and Art Taylor on drums.
